Cambodia International Debate & Public Speaking Championship Series – CamDEBATE 2024

The Cambodia International Debate & Public Speaking Championship Series (CamDEBATE) is a premier platform for professional development in public speaking and debate, cultivating a healthy culture of dialogue and the sharing of different perspectives to promote and foster understanding, friendship and knowledge among youth in Cambodia.

Details

Established in 2019 by IDP Education, a world leader in international education and student placement services, with the support from the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, Ministry of Information and the British Embassy and partnership with key institutions in Cambodia and internationally, CamDEBATE attracted over 700 applications from over 100 high schools and universities, representing six different nationalities including Cambodian, Chinese, Thai, Filipino, Malaysian and French. The final round competition in August 2019 welcomed over 1,200 participants who witnessed the top 20 young talented Cambodians and Filipinos.

CamDEBATE aims to provide:

  • An opportunity for individuals who wish to engage in debate and public speaking in English to increase their fluency and showcase their proficiency.
  • An opportunity to develop important skills that benefit participants’ academic journeys, personal development and career prospects.
  • An occasion to independently learn, research and form opinions on complex topics that will contribute to the development of well-rounded individuals.
  • A networking opportunity for individuals from different backgrounds and nationalities.
  • A platform to support the development of problem solving, critical thinking and interpersonal skills among Cambodian students and young professionals.

What makes CamDEBATE special?

Before competing in the Audition Round, all contestants will receive 3 training sessions related to public speaking and debate skills while winners from each round will continue to receive more training and mentoring sessions facilitated by experienced trainers from the Australian Centre for Education (ACE) and other CamDEBATE institution partners. The training aims to improve contestants’ confidence when speaking in public and to equip them with necessary skills for their future careers, including critical thinking, communication, problem solving and leadership skills.

European Debate Academy 2024

Hosted by JCI Scotland, this will be an in-person event that will be held in Edinburgh, Scotland. The Academy will take place from 5pm on Friday 26th January and finishing around 1pm on Sunday 28th January 2024. Our venue for the Academy is the Leonardo Hotel Edinburgh Murrayfield, 187 Clermiston Road, Edinburgh, EH12 6UG.

Why learn debating with JCI Scotland?

JCI Scotland has a long history of competing in debates over the years. In fact, the debating award at World Congress is named after a former JCI Scotland member and 1963 World President, Eric Stevenson, who introduced debating to the congress programme! Not only does this academy focus on debating and all areas associated with it, it also allows you to learn how to speak confidently which can be used in many areas of your personal and professional lives.

JCI Scotland has competed many times on the international stage and has brought several trophies home, including the first online debate at the 2020 European Conference. JCI Scotland is also creating a legacy as trainers of debating and our academy graduates have gone on to win several Local, National, European and World Competitions! Take JCI Ireland’s 2022 debate team as an example, they all attended our 2022 academy and went on to compete and win the 2022 JCI World Congress English debate competition. We also had delegates from JCI France who attended a previous academy compete at both European and World level. Don’t miss out, this could be you!

There are two ticketing options available:

  • European Debate Academy Only – £100.00 + booking fee
  • European Debate Academy & JCI Edinburgh Burns Night Gala Dinner – £160.00 + booking fee

JCI Edinburgh’s Burns Night Gala Dinner is one not be missed. An evening full of lovely food, laughter, music, dancing, whisky and even more drinks. The event will take place on Saturday 27th January from 6pm at the same hotel as the academy, Leonardo Hotel Edinburgh Murrayfield. We are offering a package price allowing you access to their Early Bird rate.

We have been able to secure a limited number of discounted rooms at the hotel where the Academy and Burns will be held. These rooms are available from £80 per room, per night on a bed and breakfast basis for a Single and £90 for a Twin/Double. Further details on how to secure the discounted rate will be shared with you in your confirmation email once you have booked your ticket for the Academy.

European Schools Debating Championships

After thorough discussions during designated meetings and Debate Exchange, the yearly conference bringing together IDEA members, members of our debate community voted to establish the European Schools Debating Championships (EuroSDC). The tournament’s first edition is set to take place in Prague from the 15th to the 17th of February, 2024. This new continental debate tournament for national teams fulfills a long-standing ambition within the European debating community. The EuroSDC aims to advance values central to the debate community: non-profit debate, intellectual rigor, and cultural exchange. This event is an opportunity to enhance critical thinking, public speaking skills, and cross-cultural understanding among young debaters.

Hosted by the Czech Debate Association and supported by IDEA, EuroSDC is supported by funding from the European Union and IDEA member nations, enabling a subsidized registration fee. Registrations for the tournament are open until January 7, 2024. Participating countries are invited to become members of the EuroSDC Council, emphasizing the event’s community-managed nature and the collaborative spirit among the European debating community. Further details about the tournament and registration information are available on the event page.
